Retro Games that are Still Enjoyable Today

When you think of the term “retro games” there are a few titles that come to mind. Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, Mario Kart, Doom, Street Fighter… the list goes on. Despite having been released decades ago many of these games have stood the test of time. They may not be as graphically advanced as games of today but they certainly do retain their level of enjoyment.

Decades on these games continue to not only release sequels but also manage to retain their player base for new entries as well as their older titles. Today we will go over some of our favorite retro games that are still fun to play.

Super Mario Bros.

Perhaps the best-known game series of all time. Mario is where a lot of gamers got their start. The iconic music combined with the challenging, yet not too challenging gameplay made this game a treat back when it was first released in 1983 and still to this day remains a favorite game for a lot of people.

The Mario franchise has gone through many iterations and releases but the classic Mario games of the 80s still remain the most beloved and enjoyed entries in the series by far. The game’s family-friendly nature has endured and continues to make it the most beloved game of all time.

Doom

Doom pioneered the first-person shooter genre when it was released in 1993. The effects work, soundtrack and the first-of-its-kind 3D environment blew gamers away almost three decades ago. Since then the game has been unofficially ported to many devices and is a favorite amongst speedrunners. The game’s widespread availability has become somewhat of a meme but at the same time it has also caused it to retain its popularity and prove that it is still very enoyable to play

As a franchise Doom still continues to do very well. The two most recent outings Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal were received well by both critics and audiences

Half-life

Half-life was way ahead of the competition when it first made its debut in 1998. It single-handedly defined the single-player game genre. The sci-fi elements mixed with the game’s incredible open world and universe building made it a beloved game when it first came out and still remains as such several years on from release.

The game was followed by one sequel, Half-life 2, and a prequel game in Half-life Alyx (released exclusively for VR platforms) the lack of a third game has also made players constantly go back to the original.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Released in 1991, Sonic the Hedgehog was a big hit for Sega and an even bigger hit amongst gamers. The blue hedgehog that could go over obstacles super-fast was unlike anything that had been released up to that point combined with the iconic music it is still enjoyed by players today, so much so that Sega is working on a remastered bundle of the original four games due out later this year.

Several years on from release the games have somewhat stagnated in terms of quality and innovation, Sega has gone several different routes with the series but hasn’t quite managed to capture the magic of the first few releases.

Fallout

Released in 1997, Fallout is often listed as one of the greatest games of all time. Although it does not match up to the RTS games of today in terms of graphics it is still unparalleled when it comes to narrative, characters, and stories. The Introduction of the SPECIAL system is what truly set this game apart. Choosing to invest certain attributes (like charisma or luck) meant that each playthrough was unique.

The Fallout franchise has spawned several sequels and spin-offs and while they are good in their own right, do not come close to what the first game managed to achieve. In recent years they have even been accused of straying away from the core vision of the original game a bit too much.
