Sony Adds VRR Support to Playstation 5

After almost two years on the market Sony finally deployed the Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) update to PlayStation Consoles earlier this week. VRR has been a long-requested feature for the PS5 console and brings with it frame rate increases, and screen tear reduction.

What is VRR?

The main job of VRR is to eliminate screen tearing when playing games, it occurs when your TVs refresh rate is out of sync with the consoles refresh rate. VRR syncs both the consoles and TVs refresh rate on the fly, resulting in reduced judder and much smoother gameplay overall.

How to enable VRR on your PS5 console?

VRR was added in the previous system update patch but wasn’t available until a few days ago. The setting can be found under display on your PS5 console, setting it to “automatic” means that games that support variable refresh rate will automatically be ready to do when connected to a supported display.

What do you need to enable VRR?

Unfortunately, VRR is not available on many TVs and monitors today. This feature is mainly found in high end 4K OLED televisions and monitors and you need a HMDI 2.1 compatible display and an accompanying HDMI cable to take advantage of this feature.

Massive gains

Many games have already been updated to take advantage of the PS5’s VRR update. All three Insomniac games; Marvel’s Spider -Man Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales and Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart have all had their frame rates unlocked. These games now hit a whopping 80-90FPS in their respective performance modes allowing for much smoother gameplay, other games have also been updated to take advantage of this feature, the feature will also be added retroactively to unpatched games.

Future

It’s clear VRR was a much-needed feature on the PS5 especially when it has existed on Xbox consoles for several years now. There are still only a few displays that take advantage of it but giving players who do have compatible displays the option to use this feature is a welcomed addition to the PS5s already incredible system options.
