Story

Modern Warfare II is set three years after the events of the original. The story sees the return of Al-Qatala, the main antagonist of the original game. The game will also feature the Mexican cartel as a secondary antagonist, helping out Al-Qatala by supplying them with weapons. Task Force 141 will team up with the Mexican special forces to bring down both entities. The campaign will also see the return of the Shadow Company.

Infinity Ward describes the theme of the campaign as “you are the company that you keep”. The new installment will tap into the gruesome and often times shocking nature of the first game where the player had to make difficult decisions and carry out tough missions. The game will dabble between the shades of grey and question the morality of the characters.

New Features

Water is being added as a major feature to the game with swimming and water combat being available across all modes. Water will also tie into gunplay; bullet velocity will be affected if you fire your gun underwater and each gun will have different ballistics and damage values for land and water combat. Additionally, it will take more shots to kill targets underwater. Different attachments will be required to increase bullet velocity and weapon potency underwater.

AI has been completely redefined for the new game. AI will now have spatial awareness with a better environment and room coordination. Procedurally generated interactions are also being developed. Infinity Ward is developing AI so that it is undisguisable from actual players, so as to respect the player.

Ledge hanging has also been added to the game. Players can now hoist themselves up onto higher ledges to reach new areas within the maps.

Players can also rappel alongside buildings, much like Rainbow Six Siege allowing them to peek into windows and buildings, adding entirely new lines of sights and verticality

In addition to sliding, dolphin diving has also been added. The dive mechanic allows players to quickly get into cover in the heat of battle.

Gunsmith redefined

Gunsmith has been completely redefined. The vision over at Infinity Ward is to make it simple while also allowing it to retain its depth. Guns will have 10 attachment slots rooted in military realism. There will be a broader and much more diverse range of attachments.

A new system called weapon platforms has been added. Weapons within the same class will share some attachments while also having some unique ones. Weapon platforms will essentially allow you to have new attachments for weapons before you unlock them. As you unlock a new weapon the attachments you unlocked for the previous gun that is shared between the previous and new gun will be available immediately which means with each weapon unlock the player will not be starting from scratch.

Attachment tuning has been added to further allow the guns to fit your playstyle. Attachments can be tuned positively or negatively. For example, a Barrel on a weapon can have weight adjustments, a heavier weight will allow for better control while a lighter barrel will increase ADS speed. For Stocks, a longer stock will allow for better aim walk speed, while a shorter stock will give your weapon better aiming stability. Attachment tuning will have major trade-offs and will allow for truly unique weapon builds

Multiplayer

Ground war returns in Modern Warfare II. Ground war maps are now referred to as battle maps. Vehicles have will have an increased emphasis on ground war. Players can lean out of cars and vehicles and shoot and climb on top of them. Additionally, players can also move from vehicle to vehicle while they are moving through the ledge system.

Vehicle damage has been reworked. It is now much deeper and nuanced. Players will be able to blow off vehicle doors to prevent certain actions while vehicle tires can be destroyed to immobile them, vehicles can be repaired, however, at gas stations.

6v6 maps obviously also make a return. These maps are slated to be smaller than the ones featured in the previous game and will have a more globetrotting feel to them. A few 6v6 maps have been detailed including Museum which is set in Spain and Grand Prix, a racing track map set in Asia that will feature cars whizzing by as the matches rage on.

Modern Warfare II will also add new equipment to the multiplayer experience including tactical cameras. Tactical cameras can be sued to observe players and mark them, if your teammates throw up their own tactical cameras a network can be created, essentially allowing you to have the entire map under surveillance.

A drill charge, much like what we’ve seen in Rainbow Six Siege can be thrown onto a wall, it will drill a hole and will allow for grenades to be thrown into vehicles or rooms.

Lots of weapons are set to make their return to Modern Warfare II including the M4, M16, ACR, Vector, P90, and MP5.
