Several New Silent Hill Games Announced

The Silent Hill franchise has sat dormant for the better part of the last decade as Konami decided to switch its focus to other ventures. The latest release in the long-running and highly beloved series was 2012’s Silent Hill: Book of Memories. After that Hideo Kojima was tasked to tackle the franchise. His take on Silent Hill would come two years later in the form of a playable teaser called P.T., which was a big hit amongst fans and critics. Development was progressing smoothly before the game was scrapped following Kojima’s departure from Konami.

Since then fans have been clamoring for a new entry in the series and the latest Silent Hill showcase gave them just that. Not only was a remake for the franchise favorite, Silent Hill 2 announced but an additional three games along with a new movie were also revealed. The franchise is on track for a very robust revival featuring returning games, and bold new innovations to the formula to push the series into the modern era.

Silent Hill 2 Remake is Coming Exclusively to PS5 and PC

Perhaps the biggest announcement at the event was the reveal of Silent Hill 2, completely rebuilt from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5. Originally released for the PS2 in 2001, the project is being helmed by Bloober Team, the studio behind 2021’s The Medium. With their long and rich history in the horror genre, this partnership was a no-brainer.

Silent Hill 2 will retain the same eerie atmosphere of the original that made it so exceptional and the team is working closely with the original creators in order to achieve this target. A major change the remake has made, however, is the adoption of an over-the-shoulder camera position for a deeper experience. This also means that combat scenarios will be redone along with some environmental set pieces.

The remake is also making use of the Lumen system of Unreal Engine 5 which allows lights to interact and play off of objects more naturally and dynamically, while the nanite technology will allow environmental artists to create a more detailed and richer game world. Silent Hill 2 will also make use of the DualSense’s adaptive trigger and haptic feedback features to deliver a new level of immersion. Silent Hill 2 will release exclusively for PS5 and PC next year.

Silent Hill f is the Next Mainline Entry in the Series

Silent Hill f will be the next mainline game in the series set in 1960s Japan. The game is being developed by NeoBards while acclaimed Japanese writer Ryukishi07, known best for his work on the Higurashi series will lead the narrative team. Ryukishi07’s work on supernatural and horror-themed projects makes him the perfect spearhead for this project.

The trailer shows a Japanese town engulfed by a mysterious fungus and looks to be a substantial departure from previous entries as it moves into more fantastical themes and moves away from the American small-town setting that the series has become known for. Silent Hill f is currently without a release date.

Ascension will be the Most Innovative Silent Hill Experience Ever

Silent Hill Ascension was one of two spin-off games announced at the event and is set to be the most innovative Silent Hill experience to date. Ascension will be a live interactive event split across multiple episodes, allowing players to experience the story together in a one-time engagement. This project was inspired by fans who play Silent Hill games on stream. Perhaps the most peculiar part of this game is that there will be no reset buttons and whatever the outcome of the live event is, will shape the canon of the entire series going forward. Silent Hill Ascension is currently slated for 2023.

Townfall is a New Silent Hill Game From No Code and Annapurna Interactive

The last game announced at the event was Silent Hill Townfall. Townfall is a new game from No Code and Annapurna interactive. No Code has worked on games like Stories Untold and Observation. The main intent behind this title is to retain the same tone of the mainline games while also pushing the series into uncharted territories. Apart from this, there wasn’t much information on the game. Silent Hill Townfall is currently without a release date.

During the live stream, a new Silent Hill movie titled Return to Silent Hill was announced. Christophe Gans, the director of the first Silent Hill movie has been in talks with Konami about this project for a while. During the stream, it was revealed that he was back to direct this entry. This movie will be completely separate from the previous two entries and according to Gans, will respect the way Silent Hill has evolved over the years. He also likened the new movie to the Twilight zone where anything and everything can happen.
