Sonic Frontiers Gameplay Revealed

The gameplay for Sonic Frontiers was shown off during the Summer Game Fest. The new game drops the classic cartoony Sonic into a photorealistic world. Sonic Frontiers will feature an all-new open-world, rife with mysteries for Sonic to explore.
As a franchise, Sonic has continually stayed relevant by iterating and branching out into several different avenues. From classic 2D Sonic games to racing games and open-world games. Sonic Frontiers takes this a step further by borrowing a page from Jump Force’s book and blending two art styles to deliver something quite unique.
A New Frontier
Sonic Frontiers will transport players to an all-new world known as Starfall islands as Sonic embarks on a journey to uncover what his arch-nemesis – Dr. Robitnik is up to.
The game features an open zone level design as described by Sega, which is a first for the series.
Starfall islands boast a photorealistic art style. Something that hasn’t been seen in sonic games before. The islands feature lush jungles with lots of detail and dense foliage while also retaining the same jump pads and speed boosters fans have become familiar with over the years.
Old and New Abilities
Sonic retains all his previous abilities from previous games including the ability to go super-fast, spin jump, initiate homing attacks on enemies, and grind rails.
With enough speed and momentum, the player is now able to make Sonic climb vertical walls. Sonic can also climb these walls in a more traditional way.
New hamster-like wheels have been added that Sonic can use to trigger environmental interactions. The game also features a number of puzzles that are used to unlock pathways and secret locations.
Combat
Combat has been tweaked slightly to fit in with the game’s open world and enemy design. Throughout the course of the game, Sonic will encounter many enemies that will take a little more than one hit to take down.
Unlike previous games, Sonic Frontiers’ enemies have more health and pose a graver threat to Sonic. The player has to outsmart the enemies in order to defeat them, while also making use of sonic’s speed and other abilities
Upon defeat enemies drop valuable collectibles. The game will also feature boss battles.
Sonic Frontiers launches later this year on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
