The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: What to Expect

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild took the gaming world by storm when it launched alongside the Nintendo Switch in 2017. In many ways, this single title set the trajectory that would allow the Switch to become the third highest-selling console of all time. It became what many would say, the killer app for the Switch, moving millions of units of the console. Its sequel The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom looks to continue this.

Initially conceptualized as a DLC add-on for Breath of the Wild the ambitious nature of the title meant that it eventually spun off into its own full-fledged title, acting as a sequel to the 2017 game. Breath of the Wild breathed new life into the Zelda franchise and Tears of the Kingdom looks to do the same, building on the many conventions established by its predecessor, while also taking bold steps forward. Today we’ll be going over just what players can expect from the game when it drops on May 12, 2023.

Sky Exploration Will be a Major Part of the Game

One of the biggest changes from the previous game will be the inclusion of sky exploration. Link will now be able to ascend to the skies and explore entirely new areas that were not present in the original. This will give the game what could possibly be the biggest map size for any Zelda game, ever. Additionally, it also means that Link will be able to explore several new points of interest and will present the player with new gameplay opportunities which include being able to use hot air balloons and using gliders to descend down to Hyrule.

Expect a Darker Tone This Time Around

Zelda games and Nintendo titles in general are known for their bright aesthetics and family-friendly nature. While Tears of the Kingdom won’t do away with the latter, it looks like the game will have an overall darker tone as compared to the previous outing. The latest trailer shows Link traversing a blight-covered Hyrule, with fearsome-looking enemies, a stark contrast to how the world was in its predecessor. Blood Moons return but they have been made much more intense as each blood moon is now accompanied by rains of fire and earthquakes.

Link Will Have New Abilities and Tools

The latest trailer gave us our first look at a number of new abilities and tools that Link will have access to in the sequel. Vehicles seem to be a major addition to the game. A drivable land vehicle (that kind of looks like a tractor) made an appearance in the trailer along with gliders and a hot air balloon. It certainly seems like traversal will see a major upgrade. Link was also seen wielding a rather intriguing-looking power glove and a suite of new weapons. The trailer also showed that Link will now be able to grind along rails.

Tears of the Kingdom Will Cost $70 at Launch

Nintendo is one of the last major publishers to move to a standard $70 price tag for their games. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will cost $70 at launch, while this change won’t apply to all Nintendo first-party games (the recently released Metroid Prime Remaster costs a reasonable $40 at launch) titles of similar budgets and scales will stick to the higher price point.
