Demon’s Souls released in 2009 introduced the gaming world to a new genre, mixing intricate game design with challenging enemies and punishing difficulty, the genre earned the eponymous title of “souls” or “souls-like” spawning the Dark Souls trilogy, Bloodborne, Sekiro and most recently, Elden Ring.
Developed in collaboration with George R. R. Martin, the man behind the Game of Thrones series of books, expectations were high especially coming off the heels of the critically acclaimed Sekiro and Dark Souls 3, for all intents and purposes the game delivered and went above and beyond what was expected of Form Software’s already impressive portfolio.

Elden Ring follows the player as they explore the lands between, a world filled with mystery, grotesque creatures, and challenging bosses, checking off all the boxes of a good. From Software title while also iterating on the open-world formula to deliver something truly unique that clicked with many players from the get-go.

The game scored an extremely impressive 96 on Metacritic and an equally impressive user score of 7.9, quickly becoming one of the best-selling games of the year and setting a concurrent player count of 950,000 on Steam, the sixth biggest game of all time, so why did Elden Ring become such a revered game amongst critics and fans alike?
One of the biggest things Elden Ring had going for it was the impressive portfolio of From Software’s previous titles, all souls’ games preceding Elden Ring, starting with 2009’s Demons Souls scored extremely well amongst critics and fans which added to the overall hype of the game and the general receptiveness of the audience towards the game.
Secondly, according to many critics, Elden Ring is the most accessible Souls game, while it still maintains the signature challenge that veteran fans have come to appreciate the game tweaks it just enough to make newcomers feel welcome enough without doing away with the formula many have come to appreciate and has become a staple of From Software’s games. The accessibility factor has made more people try the game, and appreciate it.

The game also has, what is called rewarding difficulty. While previous Souls games had punishing difficulty, which meant there was almost always one path that players had to go through in order to progress the game, Elden Ring does away with this by offering the player multiple paths because of its open-world nature. Have trouble with a boss? Explore the world, level up, take out easier mini-bosses then return and progress. The reward function keeps the player stimulated and adds to the overall enjoyment and engagement with the game.
Moving away from the oftentimes tired open-world formula, Elden Ring does something unique by doing away with all map markers which truly makes the game one big mystery, no markers for bosses, locations, items or points of interest, the new spin on the open-world formula keeps the game feeling fresh as many players, myself included still discover new hidden areas in the initial area of the game several hours in, the mysticism and joys of discovery have been a huge hit with the fans and the critics alike.

Interesting world designs, an accessible difficulty curve and huge, unique open world, and a plethora of combat options all have helped Elden Ring become one of the most revered games of all time in a short time period of time, and is one of the top contenders for the Game of the Year at this year’s Game Awards.
