Fortnite-Zero Build

Fortnite, released in 2017 took the gaming world by storm as it put a unique spin on the battle royale genre by introducing building to the mix, at a time when battle royale games which still in their infancy Fortnite was able to capture a large chunk of the market by offering a unique experience aimed at both adults and kids.

Originally intended to be a secondary mode to the games main “save the world” mode the battle royale portion soared to prominence as it offered something unique that other games did not. Building not only put a unique twist on the often-tired battle royale formula but it also offered a huge learning curve which kept the game engaging and fun for several hundred hours for many players.

The formula for Fortnite has pretty much remained the same ever since it’s release in 2017 with the game adding a few modes here there, introducing new weapons, new maps and locations and items, consequently building has also remained the same.

At the start of chapter 3, season 2 Epic Games did something truly unprecedented by removing building from the game entirely, the change went down well with most players, as nearly five years on from release new comers have had a tough time coming to grips with the games building mechanics.

Building has always been an advantage for veteran players, offering a quick reset to gunfights, often times turning the tides completely, building can also serve as a second chance for players under fire, being able to build cover on the go helps players mitigate ambush attempts by other individuals. Building is also something that has set the game apart from other battle royales completely, although it can be hard for new comers to adjust to this mechanic.

With the removal of the building mechanic proving to be popular amongst a large portion of the player base, Epic Games announced on the 29th of March that the removal will stay permanent but in a separate mode titled zero build.

This mode will allow players to hone in on their aiming and gun skills, moving away completely from building. Many players have lauded Epic Games on this decision, as it prevents “turtling”, excessive build battles and allows them to excel in their gun skills.

The change has been particularly well received from the competitive/streamer community, with Ninja, saying that this has been the most fun the game has ever been in two years.

There is no news on whether the competitive scene, (tournaments in particular) will use the no build mode but with its surging popularity, it would make sense for Epic Games to go in this direction.
