Assassin’s Creed Mirage: What To Expect

Assassin’s Creed Celebrates its 15th anniversary this year. Beginning as a spiritual successor to Prince of Persia and then evolving over time to become a full-fledged RPG game, the series has seen a lot of changes over its almost two-decade journey. Assassin’s Creed Mirage, the next entry looks to bring the franchise back to its roots.

Ubisoft gave eager fans the first official trailer along with a developer deep dive during the latest Ubisoft Forward. The presentation detailed how the game attempts to break the formula set forth by the previous three games. So, what exactly should fans expect when the game launches next year? keep reading to find out.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage Will Follow Basim’s Journey to Becoming a Master Assassin

Assassin's Creed

Assassin’s Creed Mirage will follow Basim Ibn Ishaq, the leader of the Constantinople Bureau. The character first appeared in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. His charismatic persona made him stand out and he quickly became a fan favorite. Mirage takes place roughly 20 years before the events of Valhalla in the bustling city of Baghdad, Iraq and will tell the story of Basim’s ascension to becoming a hidden one.

Basim will be 17 years old at the start of the game, the developers hinted that the story takes place over a period of time, it is likely we’ll see Basim move up the ranks throughout the campaign and watch him develop as a character and as an assassin.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage Finally Brings the Franchise Back to its Roots

Over time the Assassin’s Creed game’s have evolved into an RPG series, adding mechanics like dialogue selection, a leveling system, power caps, and a free parkour system allowing you to climb on basically any surface. Mirage will do away with all of these features in favor of a traditional parkour system that was last seen in 2015’s Assassin’s Creed Syndicate.

There will be no level system and no level cap. This is also the first time since Syndicate that the hidden ones are featured heavily with previous entries, especially Odyssey and Origins taking place before the brotherhood was established and Valhalla having them take a backseat to the main narrative.

The game is set to take a modern approach to classic mechanics including parkour and stealth and even sees the classic hidden blade return in all its glory, including the severed finger which used to be a franchise mainstay in the early days.

Say Goodbye to 100-hour Playthroughs… For Now

One of the main criticisms of the recent games have been their length. Valhalla clocks in at a whopping sixty hours for the main story alone with side content making it a nearly 150-hour commitment. Mirage will be a much more condensed experience with the story lasting around 15-20 hours.

This change won’t last, however as Codename Red, the next outing is set to be a full-fledged RPG like recent titles. Future titles will alternate between larger releases like Valhalla and smaller releases like Mirage

Denser Crowds and Classic City Structures are Set to Make a Return

Of the three previous RPG outings, none have had the same tall buildings, dense city and, crowd structure that the earlier entries did. Instead, they’ve opted for more flat play areas with sparser crowds and building placements.

Mirage will feature denser crowds and buildings than the previous entries. The trailer highlights the narrow streets and bazaars of 9th century Baghdad which heavily resemble the game design of the franchise’s earlier entries.

Lower Price For a Smaller Game

Assassin’s Creed Mirage will retail for $50 instead of the conventional $70 next-gen price tag, given its smaller length. The game initially started out as an expansion to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla before being spun off into its own project. The deluxe edition will retail for $60 and includes the forty thieves quest. A collectors edition is now available to pre-order with a tentative release date of early 2023 on PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X & S, and PC.
