Dead Island 2 Details Revealed

After a long and tremulous development journey, Dead Island 2 was officially re-announced at Gamescom 2022. After an absence of more than seven years, the long-awaited game is finally set to make its debut early next year across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.

Initially revealed in 2014, the game would switch three studios over the course of eight years before finally landing in the hands of Dambuster, an internal development studio at Deep Silver in 2019. Techland, the studio behind the original game departed the project to work on Dying Light.

The game was initially handed to Yager Development in 2012, the studio was then removed and Sumo Digital took the reigns in 2015, four years later it was handed over to Dambuster. Fans of the game have been waiting for any news or update for years now and the latest trailer seems to have been worth the wait.

Back from the Dead

Dead Island 2 allows players to choose from six different playable characters. Each character has its own unique skill tree that can be upgraded and unlocked to acquire new abilities and buffs and enhancements to existing ones.

Skills can be swapped out on the fly through a card system, similar to Fallout 76. Each playable character in the game is infected and immune which allows them to channel their inner zombie rage to execute special abilities that deal devastating damage.

Dead Island 2 will feature a wide arsenal that players can use to mow down mobs of the undead. Like Dying Light, the emphasis here is on melee combat. While this may be disappointing to some the signature beat-em-up combat of both Dying Light and Dead Island are incredibly crafted.

There will be some guns in the mix, including shotguns, Assault rifles, and hunting rifles but don’t expect the majority of the emphasis to be placed on firearms. The game will also feature throwables like grenades and Molotov cocktails.

The gore system in Dead Island 2 is extremely detailed. Developer Dambuster crafted an entirely new system around it called FLESH (Fully Locational Evisceration System for Humanoids) allowing the player to see just how their weapons affect the zombies in extreme gruesome detail including guts spilling out, skin tearing & burning, and more

Dead Island 2 launches February 3, 2023 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X & S and PC.
