Everything Revealed at Sony’s State Of Play

State of Play returned on Thursday bringing with it updates on several third-party games including release dates for Final Fantasy XVI and Stray, as well as some surprise announcements for PS4, PS5, and PS VR2 systems.

PS VR2 was the main focus of the show with Sony revealing several ports and games headed to the system including Resident Evil Village and new details on Horizon: Call of the Mountain. Our comprehensive roundup will cover every game and announcement in the show below.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

Sony’s State of Play kicked off with a bang with the long-rumored Resident Evil 4 finally being announced. The remake is said to keep the spirit, tone, and story of the original while also modernizing the graphics and controls for next-gen hardware.

Little is known about the game at this point apart from the fact that it will feature a VR mode exclusively for PS VR2. Resident Evil 4 Remake will make its way onto PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on March 24, 2023

Resident Evil Village – PS VR2 Port

Resident Evil Village, released last year will receive an exclusive PSVR2 port. The game will make full use of the headset’s full hand controls as seen in the trailer.

Details are scarce but the game should launch sometime next year when PSVR2 officially drops.

The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners Retribution Chapter 2 – PS VR2

The next chapter in The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners series was announced for PS VR and PS VR2. The game will feature a new map, new weapons and tools, and all-new challenges. Additionally, The development team has spent time really dialing up the detail, with each walker featuring a unique appearance.

The game will feature PS VR2 specific features including better hand tracking and an improved level of detail. The game will arrive on PS VR and PS VR2 sometime in 2023

No Mans Sky – PS VR2

No Mans Sky was released for the original PlayStation VR headset back in 2019. Little is known about the updated version for PS VR2. It will take full advantage of the new controllers to offer a deeper level of immersion and the power of the PS5 to deliver stunning visuals

There is currently no release date set but it should arrive next year when PS VR2 launches.

Horizon: Call of the Mountain – PS VR2

Horizon: Call of the Mountain was first revealed in January 2022. The game will focus on an all-new protagonist and setting. Furthermore, Call of the Mountain places a heavy emphasis on climbing and exploration.

The game is currently without a release date but will most likely launch with PS VR2 sometime in 2023. Read our coverage to find out more details about this VR experience set in the world of Horizon.

Stray

First revealed in 2020, Stray finally launches next month on both PS4 and PS5. The game follows the story of a cat as it makes its way through intricate puzzles and environments. The game features gorgeously detailed environments and the trailer gave us our first look at how enemy encounters will play out.

Stray launches July 19 on PS4, PS5, and PC and will also be available at no additional cost to PS+ Extra and Premium/Deluxe subscribers.  

The Callisto Protocol

The Callisto Protocol is a third-person horror survival game created by the same developer who brought us the original Dead Space. You play as Jacob Lee a prisoner on the moon as he tries to survive a mysterious virus that is turning people into grotesque creatures known as biophage.

The game will take advantage of the PS5’s spatial 3D audio and haptics from the DualSense controller to deliver a deep level of immersion. The game is set to arrive later this year on December 2 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.  

Street Fighter 6

The long-running fighting game makes its return next year when it launches on PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Street Fighter 6 will feature new ways to play across three modes called Fighting Ground, Battle Hub, and, World Tour.

The game will see the return of many fan-favorite characters like Chun-Li, Luke, Jamie, and Ryu.

Final Fantasy XVI

A brand-new trailer for Final Fantasy XVI debuted giving us a much-needed update on this highly anticipated game from Square Enix. We got a brand-new glimpse at combat which showed a hack and slash fighting style similar to the Devil May Cry series.

Final Fantasy XVI follows a new protagonist named Clive Rosfield. Two new characters Hugo Kupka and Benedikta Harman were revealed in the new trailer. The game is set to arrive in Summer 2023 on PS5 and PC.

Indie Games

Apart from the impressive AAA games, this month’s state of play also included a number of indie games.

We got our first look at RollerDrome, a futuristic skater-shooter from Roll 7. It will launch in August and has the player performing stylish skate tricks while using your arsenal to take down enemies.

Eternights, the debut game from Studio Sai is set to arrive early next year. It combines elements of hack and slash games coupled with dating simulation games to deliver a very unique experience.

Tunic, the beloved indie game that made its debut on Xbox and PC is finally headed to PlayStation this September.

Season, a bicycle adventure game developed by Scavengers Studios is set to make its debut next year. The Player records sounds, and sights and collects a vision of the world for the future.

Spider-Man PC and Horizon Forbidden West Update

During the presentation, Sony also dropped a surprise trailer for the PC port for Spider-Man. The game will arrive on PC on August 12. it will be available on the Epic Games Store as well as Steam. Miles Morales will come to PC just a few months later in the fall of 2022.

Lastly, Sony announced a major update for Horizon Forbidden West. The new update brings with it New Game+. A transmog feature as well as the ability to reset the skill tree. The game also received a long-promised graphical upgrade to its performance mode, promising better quality visual fidelity across the board. the patch is available to download on PS4 and PS5 now.

This is all that was revealed during Sony’s latest State of Play presentation. While there was a notable lack of announcements and details from first-party games and studios, particularly God of War Ragnarok. What was shown proved to be equally as exciting, giving us a promising glimpse into the third-party games lined up for the PS5 and PS4, along with a much overdue look at PS VR2 games.
